Covid-19 Announcement

Posted Saturday 18 April 2020 by Perth Swing Dance Society in , ,

Sadly, due to the Covid-19 outbreak all upcoming events have been removed from the PSDS online calendar for the time being.

We want to ensure that our community is safe and that our actions support the efforts to flatten the curve and overcome this Covid-19 pandemic.

While regular classes, swing dancing events and activities are on hold for now, we hope to keep our community connected, even during times of social distancing. Keep in touch with others in the Perth swing dance community via our Facebook page and through the pages of the schools you attend. You can also support swing schools by attending their classes online.

Please continue to support the community and one other. Stay safe and In times like these, we need to be patient and kind. This includes being kind to yourself.

All the way from Europe, we have the sensational Mikaela Hellsten and Nicolas Deniau, two of the smiliest, loveliest lindy hoppers on the international scene today.

A little closer to home, we have the fabulous Loz Yee, Julia Wharington, Joel Kohn and Kieran Yee coming at you from Melbourne, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and an infectious sense of fun.

Mark your calendars and stay tuned for further updates! #hulla2017 is coming…

Can’t Stop the Lindy Hop shirts

Posted Sunday 12 June 2016 by Perth Swing Dance Society in , ,

A few years a go the PSDS designed a fun T-shirt for the society. We wanted something other than our logo so Michelle Turner put together this ‘Can’t Stop the Lindy Hop’ design for us featuring original Lindy Hoppers Willa Mae Ricker and Leon James. It is still available on Red Bubble and you can custom design it by choosing different shirt colours, shirt styles and even hoodies. We’ve seen a few people around town wearing them but wanted to remind new and long term dancers that they are available online here. $25AUD for shirts, more for hoodies and other variations.

May is Frankie Manning Month!

Posted Monday 2 May 2016 by Perth Swing Dance Society in ,

Frankie Manning’s birthday is May 26 but his birthdays never could be contained to just a single day of celebration. So we use the entire month of May to honor Frankie’s contributions to Lindy Hop and his positive spirit.

In the spirit of Frankie, we encourage you to:

  • Party like Frankie! Throw a swingin’ birthday party or a lindy hop dance that Frankie would have enjoyed.
  • Play the music of the Savoy Ballroom and the big bands of the swing era.
  • Hold Frankie Manning inspired dance classes and workshops.
  • Share Frankie videos and stories.

Consider donating proceeds from your Frankie Month activities to the Frankie Manning Foundation. The Frankie Manning Foundation preserves Frankie’s legacy and promotes Lindy Hop worldwide through events and celebrations, as well ambassador programs, scholarships and youth initiatives.

If you don’t know who Frankie is you can find out all about him in the Music and Resources. directory.

Hullabaloo History!

Posted Saturday 5 March 2016 by Perth Swing Dance Society in , ,

It all started in 2004…

Many new dancers are unaware that by April 2016, Hullabaloo will have been running for 13 years! In 2013 we ran our 10th Anniversary Hullabaloo and boy it was a big one! Because it was such a special event some of us thought it would be a good idea to produce posters showing the history of Hullabaloo over the years. The information included which international teachers came to teach, the names of people who were on the Hullabaloo committee that year, the logo and themes and photos of the event. I designed these and would like to add them here for posterity and as an archive of modern Perth swing history and will add the newer years soon. Enjoy!
